Northern Arizona University College of Engineering and Natural Sciences

The New Laboratory Facility for the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona, encompasses approximately 92,000 square feet of new instructional and research laboratories in the Chemistry and Biological Sciences Building. The new facility supports the increasingly complex and advanced undergraduate and graduate level laboratory sciences. It includes 18 instructional labs, 18 research labs, and associated support space.

The project also consisted of the demolition of Hanley Hall and elements of that building, including the stone lintels and sandstone cladding, were salvaged and reused in the new building. The New Lab building sits on an extremely tight site in the middle of several active academic buildings.

On this project, Holder held weekly design status meetings from Planning through Construction Documents to help manage the design process and control how the project moved forward. Detailed conceptual and schematics estimates were also used to facilitate the entire teams understanding of the current costs. Finally, this project went to GMP at the Design Development phase and Holder anticipated future design impacts through detailed and frequent communication with the design team to provide an accurate final project cost in lieu of a lower upfront cost with cost increases in the future.

This project achieved LEED Gold Certification.
